Frequently Asked Questions

Updated: Feb 21, 2023

Are you considering some of the offerings here at Yogavana, but have a few queries? Perhaps these answers to FAQ will help:

  • I’m not very flexible - does that matter? Not at all! In fact you are a perfect candidate for yoga. Many people think they need to be flexible to begin yoga, but that’s a little bit like thinking that you need to be able to play an instrument before taking music lessons. Come as you are and you will find that the yoga helps you become more flexible. Your newfound agility will be balanced with strength, coordination and a sense of physical confidence and overall well-being.

  • I haven’t done yoga before so will I be able to keep up? Much like the previous answer, it doesn’t matter; you will learn to keep up! Some people can keep up from the first session, but if you can’t, it is perfectly acceptable to stop and take a child’s pose, or have a drink and take a rest before continuing. The beautiful thing about yoga is that it is a personal, non-competitive practice, so you are fully encouraged to take it at your own pace. There is never judgement or unnecessary pressure/expectation.

  • I'm not very fit - can I do yoga? Yes! You will get fit. Whether you currently have a sedentary lifestyle or are an athlete, yoga will benefit you! And it will certainly help you gain a sense of physical confidence and overall well-being. Obviously, it is advisable to check the level of the class/course before booking. It wouldn’t be advisable to join a strong, dynamic class if you haven’t done any yoga before. I would be more than happy to advise you on which class suits you best if you’d like to reach out to me privately.

  • What should I bring to class? Just bring yourself, in appropriate clothing (see below), and a small bottle of water. You might choose to bring your own yoga mat and props if you have them; otherwise they are all supplied here.

  • What should I wear? Most people wear tight, stretchy leggings and tops whereas others prefer shorts and looser clothes. The only thing that matters is that you are comfortable and can easily move and stretch in your clothing. Bear in mind that baggy T-shirts will fall overhead when you fold over (which you will do a lot). It's good to choose clothing that keeps you cool while you are active, but also bring a jumper, and maybe fluffy socks, for the relaxation, when the body rapidly cools down.

  • Do I need a yoga mat? All the equipment for class is provided. However, if you prefer to bring your own, that's fine too. Some people like to lay their own mat on top of the one provided for extra cushioning. If you have a home practice alongside our classes, then having your own mat is a great idea!

  • When should I eat before a class? When it comes to food and digestion, each individual is different and needs to find what works for them. In general it is not recommend to eat a large meal within 2 hours of a class - if you must eat after this time, then a light (easily digested) meal or snack is best. Hydration is important so drink some water before a class, and bring a bottle with you.

  • Why do people talk about the breath so much in yoga? Unlike stretching or other fitness training, yoga is more than just physically working your body. Within the physical practice of yoga, the movement of the body is connected to the rhythm of the breath, which helps to focus and relax the mind by directing the gaze and attention inward. Yoga can improve strength, flexibility and balance, whilst also calming the mind and improving posture and breath.

  • How do I pay for classes? Everything is bookable online via the website. Classes are often booked in blocks (in line with the school holidays) for the purpose of continuity. If there is space, classes can be individually booked too. All this is made clear in the ‘Book Online’ tab on the website.

  • Why is it better to book a block of classes? It takes a few classes to start to feel the benefits and make yoga part of your life. Classes sizes are limited so it is advisable to book a place onto a block of classes to avoid disappointment and guarantee your mat space. This also means you are more committed, there is increased continuity, and you have a sense of community with your class members. If you miss a class, I will always try (depending on availability) to offer you a class on another day within the next two week period.

  • Can I drop in to a class? If there is space in a class, you may drop in, but you will need to check beforehand to see if there is space. You can book online if there is availability, or phone/email to check if there has been a cancellation so that you can take that space. Note that drop-in classes are slightly more expensive than booking a block of classes.

  • What is a sound bath? It is a sensory experience where crystal bowls, gongs, chimes, and other instruments are used to produce sound frequencies, tones, and vibrations that help you reach a deep and meditative state of relaxation. Sound frequencies can have a soothing effect on the nervous system, slowing down our stress response and effortlessly shifting the mind out of an excessively busy, cluttered, and anxious state, helping regulate stress hormones. You will simply be asked to lie on a yoga mat, often with props (pillows, blankets, bolsters, eye pillows…), and simply enjoy the sounds and healing frequencies.

  • What other events do you run? Events vary throughout the year but all courses/ workshops that are running will be available to see online. They range from sound baths, focused yoga workshops, book clubs, women’s circles, wellness talks, breathwork courses, cacao ceremonies, day retreats, … and more! There are always new and exciting events being added, so do keep checking in.

Note: if you have any other questions/queries which have not been answered here, you can always call or email me (all contact details easily available on this website) and I will be more than happy to help! x
